Over twenty years ago, I was a Form 5 student. One day while playing soccer, I fell hard and ended up with neck pain so severe I couldn’t even carry my schoolbag.

The Western doctor said, “It’s nothing serious, just rest.”

The Chinese medicine practitioner gave me acupuncture; the pain eased for a while, but it always returned.

That summer, my mum took me to see a Doctor of Chiropractic — someone still very rare in Hong Kong at the time, who had just returned from New Zealand.

He didn’t rush to “crack” or twist me. He simply placed his hands gently on my spine, examined me carefully, and then said something I will never forget:

“Your pain isn’t in the neck. It’s a spinal misalignment affecting the nerves. True healing isn’t about masking pain; it’s about helping your body remember how to heal itself.”

Forty minutes later, for the first time in months, I felt relief from head to toe — like my whole body finally exhaled.

In that moment, I knew what I wanted to do with my life: bring this medicine that lets the body heal itself to more people in Hong Kong.

Years later, I travelled to New Zealand, earned my Doctor of Chiropractic degree, and returned to train and practise in Hong Kong’s top clinics.

Every time I adjust a patient, hear that gentle “click,” and see the surprise and relief in their eyes, I’m taken straight back to that Form 5 boy.

I have come to realise that outstanding clinical skill alone is never enough.
